Psychiatric Diagnosis and Management: Child
Response to Jaclynn Back
Hello Jaclynn,
As you have noted, a patient’s grief can affect their mental and physical health. Like death, grief is a natural component of life that makes individuals uncomfortable, affecting their wellbeing. Loss and grief symptoms include anxiety, anger, confusion, sadness, and insomnia, which the patient is experiencing. Essentially, lack of support from father, family, and friends is a factor that sources depression, leading to postpartum depression. Given her loss, she can develop postpartum depression if not treated immediately. Postpartum depression would minimize her capability to take care of the baby. Further, undiagnosed depressive symptoms during pregnancy have biological aftermaths, augmenting preterm birth risk (Edwards, Le & Garnier-Villarreal, 2021). The nurses need to foster functioning tailored involvements to support the patient engage in better self-care actions, precisely during the post-delivery period. Early intervention is central to circumventing the negative consequences of postpartum depression. The risk factors connected to postpartum depression comprise prenatal depression, prenatal nervousness, childcare stress, low self-esteem, and life stress.
Mindfulness exercises such as yoga and meditation can reduce the patient’s depressive symptoms. Being mindful about her experiences continually will aid in developing her mindfulness skills. This way, the patient can be present in the here and now. Mindfulness practices also encompass coping techniques like acknowledging her emotions without judgment, practicing kindness, and recognizing her feelings (Watanabe et al., 2019). Individuals who experience depression think about the past or future. Practicing mindfulness for depression can help individuals eliminate negative thoughts and attain a more focused mind. The Art Therapy Relational Neuroscience (ATR-N) approach helps reduce back pain and alleviates stress symptoms. Exercise and eating a healthy diet improve an individual’s health and wellbeing. The patient needs postpartum depression care. Notably, early intervention is imperative to evade the undesirable consequences of postpartum depression.

RE: Discussion Question #3 – Prompt
Top of Form
The patient has experienced a loss and is grieving. This grief can affect her mental and physical health. Incorporating alternative and complementary treatments in to her care can assist with recover after her pregnancy and can help her deal with relationship issues, she is currently experiencing.
Practicing Mindfulness is an effective prevention and treatment tool for people dealing with depression and stress. The Patient is experiencing both of these symptoms. She should be encouraged to incorporate mindfulness exercises such as mediation and yoga. It has been found that after using these practices there is a positive impact on wellbeing, decreased anxiety, and stress all of which will help this patient (Anderson, 2017). The Nonjudgement of experience and acting with impact in antenatal depressive symptom has been shown to prevent postpartum depression (Anderson, 2017).
Grief is a normal reaction. ATR-N therapy shows the potential of the nervous system to change. It uses enriching and novel experiences and contributes to resiliency (Macwilliam, 2017). The approach has 6 principals which have the acronym CREATE. First the creative embodiment, highlights movement, play and touch including freedom from constricting conducts and the continuum of safe interpersonal experiences. Second, relational resonation, emphasizes the importance of positive interactions to update autobiographical memory. Third Expressive communication with the use of art media to express and communicate strong emotions. Forth, Adaptive responding Art therapist provides dynamic balancing od arousal and avoidance to create control and acceptance and resiliency. Fifth, Transformative integrating which is symbol making, making art can reorganize and restructure emotional memories. Sixth, Empathizing and compassion linked with compacity for regulation allows for acceptance of one’s self and of other’s (Macwilliam, 2017). This would be good for both the patient and her spouse to participate in to make better communication and understanding of each other.
The patient should be encouraged to participate in an exercise program. Exercise is good for pregnant women. Women who participate in in an exercise program are less likely to have back pain, muscle cramps, gestational diabetes, and high blood pressure (Brian, 2019). Being active can also make you stronger and increase energy and stamina. Being involved in an exercise program can also increase your mood and make the patient feel more positive and self-confident. Exercise can also help with relaxation and overall better sleep which will aid in overall wellbeing (Brian, 2019)
The patient should be given information on a well-balanced and nutritious diet. A poor diet is associated with increase prenatal depression. Nutritional counseling and interventions for women with depression are very important. It has been found that a diet high in fats, oils, sweats, and snacks are correlated with higher perceived stress (Lindsay et al., 2017). Foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts, dairy products, and the intake of Omega-3 PUFAs should be encouraged they have been found to decrease depressive symptoms (Lindsay et al., 2017). The patient should also be encouraged to take in plenty of vitamin B12, vitamin D, folic acid, calcium, and plenty of protein. Vitamin D is especially important in the winter months when there is a decrease in the amount of sunshine (Brian, 2019).
All of these alternative and complementary therapies will aid in her ability to cope with the loss of her mother and not getting to share this experience with her. Also, the relaxation, nutrition, and exercise suggestions will aid in her over all wellbeing and ability to cope with the loss and tension between her and her husband. The ATR-N therapy would be good for both of them allowing each of them a way to express themselves and to better see the others emotional needs.
