Research Question Formulation Essay

Research Question Formulation Essay

A research question sets out the gaps that the research sets out to answer. The basis of these questions can be derived from the clinical practice or review of gaps in knowledge in literature among other sources (Vandenbroucke & Pearce, 2018). In my clinical practice, I work with other healthcare providers including nurses in a long-term care facility providing rehabilitation services. Through my entire practice in this facility, I have noticed various issues in clinical practice that would require an evidence-based approach. These issues are related to readmission, the time taken for recovery, patient safety, the role of technology, and patient-centered care. In this discussion, I will describe my research questions that would provide answers to these questions through research.

The Research Questions

Research questions can adopt various formats during formulation. I formulated four research questions about clinical issues in my practice. The first question stated: “Are there any relationships between the time for initiation of exercise training programs and the muscular function among patients who have suffered a stroke:” This research question would be used for correlational design in quantitative research method. The second research question stated, ‘is there a difference in perception of quality of life among patients who received lower limb amputation after trauma and those who sustained hemiplegia after stroke? This question is a comparative type of design that would be used in quantitative methods. The third question stated, ‘Does the use of video games improve motor skills, mood, and memory than the use of physiotherapy among patients with motor and neurocognitive deficits following trauma?’ This question was an experimental type assessing the outcomes of two interventions, the usual treatment physiotherapy and use of video games. The last question stated: ‘What are the patient perceptions of bedside nursing shift handover that is done in their presence or their presence or their caregivers’?’

Research Question of Choice

I prefer the experimental type question that stated ‘‘Does the use of video games improve motor skills, mood, and memory than the use of physiotherapy among patients with motor and neurocognitive deficits following trauma?’ In this research question, the independent variable will be the outcomes of physiotherapy. Physiotherapy has been used in long-term rehabilitation to improve motor function and the quality of life of the patient. a study by Varalta et al. (2021) showed that physiotherapy can be coupled with cognitive treatment to improve cognitive and motor functions in diseases such as Parkinson’s disease (Varalta et al., 2021). Physiotherapy alone for neurocognitive improvement also showed some positive outcomes.

The dependent variable in the question was the outcome of video games in the improvement of memory, mood, and motor skills. this is a new technological application that has been tried in some clinical settings to enhance patients’ neurocognitive skills. A systematic review by Ferreira Brito et al., (2019) assessed the use of game-based intervention in training and rehabilitation as well as neuropsychological assessment. According to Ferreira-Brito et al. (2019), video games have been used to promote learning motivation, and control in some non-trauma settings.

The population in this research question are patients under long-term rehabilitation care and had suffered trauma of whatever kind that impacted their neuro-cognition, motor skills, and mood. According to Wilson et al. (2020), traumatic brain injury causes different levels of disability in cognitive performance, motor speed function, and overall quality of life. These patients end up requiring long-term rehabilitative care. De Luca et al. (2019) acknowledged the impact of traumatic injuries on the motor, cognitive, emotional, and psychological functions of patients.

The chosen research question provides a testable hypothesis that video games have a better impact in improving motor skills, memory, and mood of trauma patients with these deficits. Two interventions are to be compared but one intervention, physiotherapy would act as a control group (Fandino, 2019). The main intervention would remain the use of video games. The research would then aim at understanding the temporal sequence involving the use of video games and improvement in the aforementioned patients’ domains of function. Running this experiment would therefore be feasible with the established because of the means to access the interventions and the measurability of these variables.

Reasons for Interest in this Question

This research question would provide me with an experimental study design that will ensure the use of controls because of its design (Ratan et al., 2019). The use of controls would ensure that impact of confounders on the study findings would be reduced. This research question also interests me because it brings in a novel intervention that is yet to be applied to my practice. My practice setting deals with patients with varied deficits in all domains of human functioning. Implementing a novel evidence-based intervention would be a great breakthrough in my practice for the patient in need of neurocognitive and psycho-emotional improvements.

In sum, the set research questions are relevant to my practice. They would provide an evidence-based answer to my practice gaps involving the role of novel technologies, patient quality of life, shift handover, and patient-centered care. My preferred design would be the experimental type question that would involve video game use in the trauma patient with neurocognitive deficits and emotional problems
