Social Problems Within Education Worksheet Essay
Describe some social problems within educational institutions (100 words).
Euthanasia is the practice of ending the patient’s life to limit their suffering. Most of the patients who go through euthanasia are terminally ill or are going through tremendous pain. Euthanasia is a social problem since some proponents and opponents have different opinions about the issue (Fontalis et al., 2018). The proponents of euthanasia argue that patients have the right of self-determination on an active ending of suffering. On the other hand, the opponent argues against euthanasia due to the impact of the physician-patient relationship ((Fontalis et al., 2018). At the medical institutions, the healthcare professionals are taught the importance of providing patient care to all patients. Euthanasia becomes a social issue since the healthcare professional has two complicated choices.
Explain how social problems within social institutions (on micro and macro levels) have perpetuated or affected the social problem you selected (250 words).
Social institutions have different beliefs on social issues like euthanasia. According to Abohaimed et al. (2019), no person has the right to decide when one should die and who should live. Following this, one should be left to live instead of their life being cut short. Euthanasia is taught to the medical students to know how to handle the issue once they face it while in practice. One of the social problems in educational institutions is the right to live, which has primarily affected euthanasia. A healthcare worker who believes that all people should enjoy life will have a hard time considering euthanasia.
According to Levin, Bradley, and Duffy (2020), there are different types of euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia brings more confusion to a medical professional who believes that everyone should receive quality patient care since they have the right to live life fully. Following this, it will be hard for the healthcare worker to grant the patient’s wish to allow the patient to administer means of death. Social issues like racism, politics, education attainment, ender, and religion significantly affect euthanasia. For example, Ay and Öz (2018) explain that whites are more likely to approve euthanasia than blacks and other races in the medical profession. On the other hand, the approval towards euthanasia decreases as education attainment increases because the more one is educated, the more they know about better treatment methods and have better access to medical care. In terms of religion, the people who have no religious affiliations have a greater chance of approving euthanasia than religious people.

While the right to live must always supersede any individual decision regarding when to die, it is increasingly evident that euthanasia continues to gain more support within the Western world population. A study by Inglehart et al. (2021) examined attitudes towards euthanasia and established that individuals in high-income countries have a favorable view of euthanasia. Further, the authors established that countries with higher life expectancies and lower infant mortalities were likely to accept euthanasia. The authors further showed that “euthanasia-related attitudes were associated with economic, religious and health-related factors,” (Inglehart et al., 2021).
Based on the above findings, a probable solution to the disparate attitudes towards euthanasia, not only in developed countries but also in developing ones, ought to be addressed from the three societal facets, namely, economic, religious, and health. Addressing the issue based on these elements will allow constructive debates on the value of life, how and when to terminate it (based on personal or care-provider advice). Where a patient is in unbearable pain, from which death is the ultimate outcome, euthanasia should be a valid and acceptable option. However, such a decision must take into account the patient’s religious beliefs regarding the practice and the economic impact such a decision may have on the well-being of relatives, caregivers, or children. However, this approach differs significantly from historical perceptions, where euthanasia was always unacceptable.
