The stakeholders include various groups crucial to the success of the improvement project. As the primary beneficiaries, patients hold the utmost importance in the initiative, ensuring their safety and well-being are at the forefront. The medical staff, comprising nurses, physicians, and pharmacy technicians, will be directly involved in executing the proposed changes and may need to adjust their workflows to accommodate new practices. Management and administrators play a pivotal role in overseeing the project and allocating the necessary resources (Petkovic et al., 2020). The IT department, responsible for maintaining technical aspects, will need to provide support and troubleshooting during the transition. Healthcare regulators and accrediting bodies may impose specific requirements that must be met for compliance and accreditation. According to Petkovic et al. (2020), the involvement and support of patients’ families are critical in understanding their needs and concerns throughout the implementation process. Additionally, insurance providers should be part of the planning and evaluation process as the improvement project’s outcomes may impact them.

The proposed action steps for implementing the quality improvement plan involve integrating computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and online nursing documentation (NDMR) systems. However, some medical staff might resist these changes due to unfamiliarity with digital platforms. To overcome this challenge, adequate training and support will be provided. Adopting barcoded medication administration may also require additional investments in technology and training for the staff, which might pose initial challenges (Kraus et al., 2021). Developing the process flow chart and cause and effect diagram will necessitate coordination among various stakeholders and departments, which might be challenging due to scheduling and prioritization conflicts.

Conducting interviews and analyzing data to identify the root causes of medication errors may prove time-consuming, requiring cooperation from staff already burdened with their regular responsibilities. The cost of implementing the improvement plan, including technology upgrades, training, and potential process changes, may require convincing management to allocate resources, especially if immediate cost savings are not apparent. The required resources for the improvement plan include investments in technology infrastructure, training, and education programs, data analysis and quality improvement specialists, and communication and collaboration tools (Kraus et al., 2021). While these may incur initial costs, they are essential for enhancing patient safety and reducing long-term costs associated with medication errors, making them cost-effective in the long run.
