The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health

The Institute of Medicine (IOM), in 2011, published a report that outline various change aspects required to meet the increasing healthcare demands. There have been advancements and changes in American healthcare systems that have been evident in the need for care for an increasingly aging population, the need for change in scope of nursing practice, and the health technology required. These change reforms included changes in nursing education, role, and responsibilities. The report by the IOM acknowledged the enormous contribution of the nursing workforce to the healthcare delivery of the United States. This paper summarizes the key messages by the IOM report, its influence on nursing leadership and education, nursing evolution to meet aging population demands and pupation diversity, and the role of nursing professional development in care across the human lifespan and wellness-illness continuum.

Key Messages by the IOM Report

The report presented four key message recommendations that focused on the nursing workforce, healthcare needs, improving nursing healthcare across the lifespan (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine et al., 2021). The first recommendation suggested that nurses should practice to their full extent per their training and education. Nurses have been barred by policy, historical, and regulatory bottlenecks that have limited their capacities to transform their knowledge and skills into a wide scope of healthcare. These barriers have led to scope-of-practice limitations.

The second message by the IOM recommended an improvement in the healthcare education system to ensure seamless educational progression that will enable nurses to achieve higher education and training levels. Nurses upon receiving their practice licensure should have an established system to enable them further their knowledge and skills so that their competencies can improve and ultimately enable them to deliver safe quality care. This recommendation was also backed up by the increasing complexity of various domains of healthcare delivery including healthcare technology.

The IOM also recommended that nurses should participate in redesigning American healthcare through partnering and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals. Collaboration is an essential component of nursing leadership that is vital in revitalizing the healthcare system’s transformations. This recommendation would see nurses efficiently take part and responsibilities inpatient management plan implementations =, identification of weakness, and achievement of patient care goals. More importantly, the nurses should reconceptualize their roles through policy development participation by partnering with health policymakers.

The last message by the IOM concerned effective data collection and information infrastructure improvement that would improve policymaking and workforce planning. The lack of sufficient data has impacted strategic workforce planning. When sufficient data is available, understanding regional health workforce needs is enhanced and healthcare planning and goal setting are enabled. The nurses can play a collective role with other healthcare professionals to archive data management and informatics.

The IOM Report’s Influence of Education and Leadership

The IOM report provided recommendations that have influenced nursing leadership and education. The IOM recommended that healthcare governance through nursing schools, accreditation bodies, healthcare organizations, and nurse editions should ensure nurses’ engagement in lifelong learning. The IOM saw a future of nursing where all nurses would be considered leaders in various capacities in practice. Therefore, it is recommended that by 2020, the United States should achieve 80% nurse education preparation with baccalaureate degrees.

Various actions have been taken to achieve the recommendation by the IOM at various levels. The Campaign for Action program has been installed in all states. This program has enabled various legislative and collaborative. According to an analysis by Thew (2019) on the position of the country concerning the IOM report, some states such as New York had made significant legislative steps to achievement of this goal. New York passed a state law that required newly licensed registered nurses without BSN degrees to acquire them in the next ten years following licensure. The Campaign for Action also reports achievement of the doctoral nurse’s number per the recommendations by the IOM. By 2020, the nation had doubled the number of RNs with doctoral degrees from about 10,000 to 28000 (The Campaign for Action, 2021). The campaign for action has individual success in other states as well. Edwards et al., 2018) reported that nurses who had achieved doctor of nursing course had made significant improvements in quality, efficiency, and safe care. Under these millstone developments, BSN-prepared nurses have opportunities to promote their professional development and pursue other subspecialties in intrusion to contribute to the Campaign for Action program.

Nurses’ Role and Education on Population Diversity and Aging

The American Nurses Association (ANA) acknowledges the impact the deficit the aging population and the healthcare system overburdening brings to the care delivery. The role of the nurses in bringing the balance is essential (ANA, n.d.). The nurses play essential roles in identifying diseases peculiar to old age and other cultural variations. Identification of cases of elderly abuse, Alzheimer’s, and making necessary coordination of care are some of the imprint roles of nurses in cultural population diversity and aging. A nurse is prepared to promote physical, social, emotional, and mental domains of life in multicultural settings.

Professional Development and Caring in Population Diversity

Ethnicity and race remain forefront in necessitating multicultural nursing that will necessitate professional development (Tazeau, 2018). Career development pathways in the States enable nurses to pursue different files of nursing to improve their skills and knowledge in managing diseases that present variably among various cultures. The wellness illness continuum requires that the nurse is conversant with different promotive and preventive strategies at various stages. Acquisition of the knowledge and skills to do so is a lifelong process. The nurse also participates in the management of patients in the evolving healthcare system. The nurses have coordination roles in the evolving system. These roles are achieved through collaboration and coordination

Conclusion

Nursing education, professional development, leadership, and collaboration are essential in the career of a nurse. the IOM report on the future of nurses has made achievements promoting these aspects of nursing care through the campaign for action programs. However, nurses are still required to do more in professional development to keep up with the evolving system.
