The Role of the Nurse Informaticist in Systems Development and Implementation Essay
The system development life cycle (SDLC) is a multistep process describing how various steps are undertaken, including the role of various participants in fulfilling the process (Azar, 2021). Implementation of a new system into an organization requires the participation of every individual who will be affected by the change. Graduate-level nurses play a vital role in the whole process with specific roles in the planning, analysis, designing, implementation, and post-implementation support. A description of the graduate-nurse role in leadership follows.
Planning is the preliminary phase of the SDLC that determines a need for or against the incorporation of a new system in an organization. During planning, the scope of the problem is defined, possible solutions are explored, and a feasibility test performed to select a solution is done. In addition, project scheduling and assimilation of the required resources, as well as project launching, are done (Azar, 2021). Nurses` role at this stage is limited due to the technical knowledge required in this stage, however, they can provide insight into the need for the new system and the gaps identified (Azar, 2021). The insights provided can be used to ensure the implementation of the system to save the organization money and time.
During the analysis phase, the organization searches deeper into the sources of the problem, allows for the submission of possible solutions, and conducts analysis. Besides, further activities, including prioritization of requirements, evaluation of alternatives, review of organizational policies, suggestion of recommendations, and customization of the system to meet the organization`s needs, are performed. Nurse leaders play a vital role in this phase in bridging the gap between the staff nurse and the implementation team on how to integrate the system effectively (Singletary & Baker, 2019). Besides, nurse leaders work with various teams to spearhead the analysis process, including cognitive task analysis, human factor engineering, and cognitive engineering. Analysis experience can be helpful during the designing phase.
The design of the new system requires the incorporation of various experts, including programmers, network engineers, and database developers. Proposals on specifications, operations, and features of the system are presented in this phase. In this stage, nurse leaders use their experience and expertise to work with technical designers and provide insights on how to best design the system (Azar, 2021). Additionally, nurses assess the provided design and determine how the system aligns with the nursing process.
The implementation phase is when the system is incorporated into the clinical system. System customization, installation, and testing are done before implementation. Various activities, including staff training, maintenance of the system, and evaluation of outcomes, occur during the implementation phase (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). Because nurse leaders take an active role in implementation, they can conduct staff training on how to use the new system while explaining the various components of the system and how they can use the system. They can also entertain questions from members and explain various concepts of the system. This helps members to understand the system better and take an active role in the implementation of the system.
Finally, post-implementation support follows the implementation phase. This stage is characterized by regular maintenance and upgrade of the database to fit the intended function while enhancing the viability and performance of the system (Singletary & Baker, 2019). Nurse leaders have a vital role in communicating constantly with the management regarding the system about the functioning of the system and its impact on the clinical practice (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2022). They also provide further insight on how to improve the system based on the information gathered from various nurses regarding their experience with the system. Nurse leaders’ participation is important at every stage, and they should take an active part in all the processes or otherwise jeopardize the whole process of SDLC.
