Translational Research Graphic Organizer Paper

Translational research involves turning observations in the laboratory, clinic, and community into interventions that enhance the health of individuals and the public, from diagnosis and therapies to medical procedures and behavioral changes. It allows healthcare providers and organizations to offer or recommend evidence-based practice and scientifically-sound interventions to address healthcare issues. The purpose of this assignment is to compare translational research articles to quantitative and qualitative articles with regard to the identified nursing practice problem.

Nursing Practice Problem:

In non-English speaking patients with uncontrolled hypertension (P), does including family as a support system while educating patients (I) rather than the use of an interpreter (C), lead to improved blood pressure management and decrease hospital readmission (O) over six months in the treatment period (T)?

Traditional Qualitative Research Type: Grounded theory approach

Observations (Similarities/Differences)
Methodology Double-blind randomized controlled trial.

60 patients hospitalized in CICU were selected based on inclusion criteria and assigned into two groups (with and without family members presence during teaching round), uniformly by the random minimization method.

Qualitative Methods

The researchers used the philosophical framework of post-positivism and the grounded theory approach.

In Jaberi et al. (2020) study, participants were randomly assigned into categories of two groups, while in Tam et al. (2022) participants were not randomly assigned to experimental and control groups.
Goals To determine the effect of family presence at teaching rounds on patient’s anxiety and satisfaction in cardiac intensive care unit (CICU).

To explore Spanish-speaking LEP parents’ views about roles of interpreters and providers during a hospital encounter, optimal modalities of interpretation, and barriers to services. Jaberi et al. (2020) sought to establish the impact of family involvement in patient education whereas Tam et al. (2022) focused on family members’ views on efficacy of interpreters.
Data Collection Face to face interviews

Self-reported questionnaires- collect data on patient’s satisfaction.

Focus groups- Spanish-speaking LEP parents of children discharged from the hospital took part in focus groups.

Focus groups were selected due to their ability to obtain a wide-range of opinions, perceptions, and spontaneous reactions, and emergent themes to ensure that key issues are not ignored.

Jaberi et al. (2020) used interviews and questionnaires, while Tam et al. (2022) used focus groups.

Traditional Quantitative Research Type: Quantitative descriptive

Observations (Similarities/Differences)
Methodology A single-blind randomized, parallel group, controlled trial.

100 participants who met the inclusion criteria were selected by convenience sampling and randomly assigned into control, patient-oriented, family-oriented and patient and family-oriented groups.

Quantitative descriptive cross-sectional approach Maslakpak et al. (2018) were randomly assigned to  two groups, while in Shibily et al. (2021), participants were not assigned to control and experimental groups.
Goals To assess the effectiveness of family involvement in patient education on hypertension management.

To describe perceptions of nurses’ and nursing students’ on family involvement in the care of hospitalized adult patients in Saudi Arabia.

Maslakpak et al. (2018) sought to evaluate the efficacy of engaging family members, while Shibily et al. (2021) aimed at describing nurses’ and students’ perception in their involvement.
Data Collection Questionnaire- The Hill-Bone Compliance to High Blood Pressure Therapy Scale was used to collect data.

The questionnaire has 14 questions which fall into three categories: low sodium regimen adherence, medication adherence, and medical appointments adherence.

The data was collected using a questionnaire. Created by developed by Al-Mutair et al. in 2014.

Data were collected using convenience sampling of nursing employees and nursing students with different education levels through social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Twitter, and Facebook.

Questionnaires were used as the data collection tools in both studies.

Conclusion

One of the translational research articles evaluated the impact of family involvement in patient education in cardiac intensive care unit, while the second one sought assessed the efficacy of engaging family members in patient education on hypertension management. The qualitative article described the views of Spanish-speaking LEP parents about roles of interpreters and providers during a hospital encounter. On the other hand, the quantitative article described views of nurses’ and nursing students’ on family involvement in the care of hospitalized adult patients.

A propose nursing practice problem for an EBP project. Does including family as a support system while educating patients (I) rather than the use of an interpreter (C) in non english speaking patients with uncontrolled hypertension (P), lead to improved blood pressure management and decrease hospital readmission (O) over the course of six months (T) in the treatment period?

The purpose of this assignment is to conduct a comparison on different research designs to better understand their designs and application. Understanding the different types of research design is important so that nurses can effectively apply evidence-based research into practice to address issues and offer better patient care.

You will utilize your approved nursing practice problem to complete the evidence-based practice project proposal assignments for this course and NUR-590, during which you will synthesize all of the sections into a final written paper detailing your evidence-based practice project proposal. — A propose nursing practice problem for an EBP project. Does including family as a support system while educating patients (I) rather than the use of an interpreter (C) in non english speaking patients with uncontrolled hypertension (P), lead to improved blood pressure management and decrease hospital readmission (O) over the course of six months (T) in the treatment period?

Review feedback from your instructor on your “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal: Identification of Nursing Practice Problem,” submitted in Topic 1. If your original proposed nursing problem was outside the scope of nursing practice or not conducive to an evidence-based practice project proposal, work with your instructor to identify a new topic prior to beginning this assignment. If your proposed topic requires revision, complete this prior to beginning this assignment.
Conduct a literature search on your approved nursing practice problem. Find two translational research articles, one quantitative article, and one qualitative article.

Using the “Translational Research Graphic Organizer,” present your proposed topic and, in the tables provided, compare one translational study to the quantitative study, and one translational study to the qualitative study.
Refer to the “Evidence-Based Practice Project Proposal – Assignment Overview” document for an overview of the evidence-based practice project proposal assignments.
