Communication is vital in all disciplines. Rhetoric/persuasive devices are vital communication devices in many conversations. Rhetoric is common in politics and business because persuasion is common in communication. Rhetoric in nursing is evident in various resources, as discussed earlier. This essay reflects on the evaluation of rhetoric in nursing.

Rhetoric or persuasive skills are useful in nursing. They are used in nursing education, nursing practice, and patient education. Rhetoric is an essential skill in communication, a pillar in nursing practice and nursing education. During the exercise, differentiating between rhetoric and other literary skills was challenging but interesting. However, explaining the intended use of these literary devices was rather easy and exciting. Finding meaning in the sources explored was also interesting.

Selecting the most appropriate sources was challenging. I searched for the most interesting and debatable topics in nursing and searched them from various recognized databases. I also looked from reputable nursing-related websites for interesting recent articles, speeches, posts, photos, and videos for insight. I then selected those directed towards a certain audience/ population using keywords such as education and nursing. I selected the most appropriate and exciting resources for the rhetoric assignment.

The examples are all similar to my past experiences. However, the attention employed to rhetoric in these resources is rather different. They use multimodal writing forms such as “providing empirical evidence, classification, contrast, process analysis, classification, description, narration, and illustration” (Mitchell, 400). These modes have superimposed effects in persuasion and make the resources more convincing. All these forms of writing are important, and I will utilize them in my future writing.

Understanding rhetorical situations and strategies will be helpful in various ways. It will help form good relationships with other workers and patients. In addition, it will help determine flaws in communication and help avoid them. Rhetoric will also help sway people to accept my opinions in my endeavors in politics and businesses. Thus, rhetoric will be useful both in my career and in activities outside my career.

Unit 3 Writing in Your Discipline: Analysis and Reflection

 

@ Purpose

 

We have been examining what a rhetorical situation involves.  For this paper you will have a chance to apply that information in the discipline that you are majoring in (or might like to major in).  We will practice in class analyzing shorter works from various fields.

 

Goal: The goal of this paper is to analyze and compare the rhetorical situations from your area of specialization, to apply the vocabulary and concepts we have been learning about rhetorical situations to your field, and to understand some of the rhetorical moves in your discipline.

 

þ Instructions

 

For this assignment you will:

  1. Choose three different types of writing from your discipline to analyze (if you are undecided choose from a discipline that you might be interested in). You must receive approval from the instructor. Include a brief description/summary of each (no more than a paragraph for each piece). An original copy should be attached (or screen shot) at the end of the paper as an Appendices. Collecting these sources may involve asking an expert in the field for some resources (teachers from your subject area or other experts).
    1. One must be an academic article,
    2. One must be a digital piece of writing (web publication, video, social media post, etc.)
    3. The last one can be any other kind of writing from your discipline (email, memo, lab report, field notes, drawings, etc.)

**(Optional) As one of your three sources you can choose to interview someone        from your field/discipline about the writing that they do. This can be a professor   or other type of expert (someone actually working in your field).

  1. Develop interview questions (attach these as an Appendix at the end of your paper).
  2. Make an appointment with the person you will interview
  1. Write a paper that analyzes the rhetorical moves that the writer makes in each piece of writing. What are the similarities and differences between these different types of writing within the same discipline? How does the audience, purpose, context, discourse community drive the rhetorical choices that are made? What are the rhetorical strategies that are being used (ethos, pathos, logos, Kairos) and what is their likely effect on the audience and genre? What textual evidence can you use to support your claims?  This means you will specifically identify and analyze the following components of the paper’s rhetorical situation and how the rhetorical strategies impact or are impacted by these factors:

  1. Write a reflection on this process. What was easy or difficult about this process? How did you go about selecting your pieces? Consider the following elements for your reflection. How are these examples similar or different to your past writing experiences? Which forms of writing are you likely to use in the future?  How can understanding and identifying rhetorical situations and strategies be helpful in your future writing endeavors both in your field and out of your field?

 

  1. Cite all materials that are used on a Works Cited page.
