Telehealth is one of the most advanced technologies that demonstrate a significant potential to transform care practices and enable healthcare organizations to achieve various desired outcomes, including care access, affordability, and utilization. Neville (2018) contend that telehealth technology entails various modalities of delivering care, including patient consultations through video conferencing, e-health portals, and wireless applications. The rationale for incorporating telehealth modalities into nursing practices is to promote distant care delivery, alleviate the need for in-person care, and improve access to care for people in underserved remote areas. Amidst the contribution of telehealth in nursing practice, this paper summarizes scholarly articles that support the incorporation of telehealth technology in healthcare.

The employed research processes

The process of selecting ideal scholarly sources that justify the rationale for telehealth technology in the current nursing practice entailed utilizing keywords and subtitles, as well as reputable databases for evidence. According to Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt (2019), it is essential to understand the fundamental differences between licensed scientific databases before locating evidence to inform research questions. As a result, I accessed three licensed online databases, including Elsevier, SAGE, and BioMed Central (BMC). These databases publish recent, peer-reviewed, and relevant journal articles for nursing-related topics, including health information technology. Further, I used keywords and subtitles, such as ‘telehealth technology,’ ‘telehealth and quality care,’ ‘telehealth technology during the COVID-19 pandemic,’ and ‘telehealth technology and patient satisfaction‘ to select appropriate evidence sources. This search process yielded four journal articles published between 2018 and 2021.

According to the researcher, telehealth refers to a combination of various routes of care delivery, including “patient consultations via video conferencing, transmitting still images, e-health with patient portals, remote monitor of vital signs, continual medical education, consumer-focused wireless applications, and nursing call centers” (p. 1). This narrative review is insightful and consistent with the need to explore the importance of incorporating telehealth into clinical practices. Therefore, nurse researchers can use it as a profound source of valid, justifiable, up-to-date, and relevant evidence.

In this systematic review of current evidence, Monaghesh & Hajizadeh (2020) aimed to identify the role of telehealth services in preventing, diagnosing, treating, and controlling diseases amidst the COVID-19 era. Consequently, the researchers identified and reviewed 8 studies from 5 databases; PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and Science Direct. Before delving into an insightful analysis of the selected studies, Monaghesh & Hajizadeh (2020) identified the COVID-19 pandemic as a burdensome disease that forced countries to implement different restrictive regulations, including quarantine, travel restrictions, and social distancing policies to reduce the risk of exposure to the viral disease. These restrictions constrained in-person care delivery, prompting healthcare organizations and professionals to incorporate technology-aided care delivery modalities. The reviewed studies associated telehealth technology with multiple benefits, including eliminating the need to send patients to overpopulated and overwhelmed hospitals, providing real-time consultations, facilitating effective capturing, storing, and processing of patient medical records, enhancing information interoperability to real-time data exchange and preventing in-hospital COVID-19 transmission. This systematic review provides evidence-based justifications for the implementation of telehealth technology during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its findings are transferable, meaning nurses can use this information to inform the future incorporation of telehealth technology into nursing practices.

Summary of Recommendation

Based on the reviewed publications, telehealth technology provides an advanced alternative for care delivery that bridges distance, geographical, and time barriers. This technology impacts healthcare organizations, patient satisfaction, interdisciplinary team productivity, and employee retention by mitigating the impacts of understaffed departments, reducing resource burdens associated with in-hospital care delivery, improving process efficiency and accuracy, reducing service delays, and improving interprofessional communication and collaboration necessary for care coordination.

Amidst these benefits, healthcare organizations must address organizational factors that act as barriers to the effective implementation of telehealth technology. According to Scott Kruse et al. (2018), organizational barriers to telehealth adoption include resistance to change, constrained institutional capacity, cost issues, technically challenged staff, reimbursement concerns, infrastructural deficiencies, and unsupportive organizational culture. Evidence-based strategies for addressing these challenges include improving staff’s computer literacy through training, establishing reimbursement changes to accommodate telehealth technology, establishing multidisciplinary collaboration to promote telehealth implementation, adopting up-to-date information systems that support telehealth, and addressing resistance to change through engaging all stakeholders and obtaining employee buy-in.

A well- prepared annotated bibliography is a comprehensive commentary on the content of scholarly publications and other sources of evidence about a selected nursing-related technology. A bibliography of this type provides a vehicle for workplace discussion to address gaps in nursing practice and to improve patient care outcomes. As nurses become more accountable in their practice, they are being called upon to expand their role of caregiver and advocate to include fostering research and scholarship to advance nursing practice. An annotated bibliography stimulates innovative thinking to find solutions and approaches to effectively and efficiently address these issues.
