Stakeholders’ Influence on Practice Change Essay

The term stakeholder generally refers to an individual, a group, or an organization that is affected by the outcome of a project or initiative or can affect the outcome of the project or initiative (De Oliveira and Rabechini, 2019). The general stakeholders in healthcare include the patients, different healthcare organizations, physicians, nurses, the government, the community, insurance companies, and caregivers, among others (Laird et al., 2020). This discussion presents the stakeholders I anticipate will be part of the interprofessional team when implementing my future practice change project and the barriers I might experience with the stakeholders.

The stakeholders that will be part of the interprofessional team in my practice change project include the American Diabetes Association, diabetes support groups, nurses, doctors, endocrinologists, nutritionists, and community groups. Each of these stakeholder groups will impact the implementation of the project since they include those affected by the project’s outcome and those who will participate in practice change implementation. In their study, Wensin and Groll (2019) note that the American Diabetes Association is a health organization that supports research translation of findings and the implementation of evidence into practice. Thus, it will be an instrumental stakeholder in the practice change project. The diabetes support groups, community groups, patients, nurses, doctors, and endocrinologists will be affected by the project outcomes.

The barriers I might experience with these stakeholders while implementing the practice change project include difficulties in understanding stakeholders’ needs and expectations. Research shows that the problem in understanding stakeholders’ needs and expectations is a major barrier to practice change implementation since it affects its implementation (Byrne, 2018). Another significant barrier is the failure to identify potential conflict areas. De Oliveira and Rabechini (2019) note that stakeholder management is essential in dealing with diverse stakeholder groups and identifying potential conflicts. Identifying the areas of potential conflict helps address them, thus improving the chances of project success.

In conclusion, stakeholder engagement in practice change projects increases the possibility of success and acceptability of the practice change. The stakeholders identified above will be involved in the practice change initiative. Barriers to stakeholder engagement should be identified and addressed.
